Rhythm Between States

The text shared by Amir emits a sort of rhythms in-between states.

These are the rhythms between states and stateless, between states of being and becoming, between here and there, then and now. Or perhaps between here and now, there and then

These are rhythms of our bodies, between states of moving and stagnation, being moved and getting stranded, in motion and staying still. Or maybe between journeying and resting, migration and nesting.

These rhythms are vibrations and oscillations, between Kompang beats and Ghazal melodies, between adoption and adaptation. In between the seasons of monsoon and harvesting, lingering between history and memory, dry and wet.

They are anecdotes of the artworld encounters and Abang Jeri Kak Sita

A state between being broken and becoming (un)repaired

Distance between art (theory) and craft (making)

Full or emptiness

Systemic injustice and institutional receptions

Colonial violence and East meet West

And South meeting North

They shift between a state of

monologue and dialogue

wisdom and reflection

memoir and interview

human and machine

injustice and care

they are, we are

statelessness and mindfulness

of the 99 flagbearers and the 99 names

rhythm vibration oscillation

it flows (and overflows)

stop breathe

carry on

a to z

Thank you my friend. I just read your excellent book in one go. I find it very inspiring. My head is now spinning with mixed thoughts and feelings. And ideas fly around like colourful butterflies!

Your idea of Milo is genial. And I want a copy of your book when it is out!

Title Self Portrait with Ibanese Rug

Medium: Acrylics on canvas | Year: 2021 | Size: 150 × 110 cm

Details:

“Self Portrait with Ibanese Rug” is rooted in my time in Miri, Sarawak. I bought the rug from an Ibanese family while staying in their longhouse during a video project on indigenous communities. Draping it across my face in this painting, I turn the rug into both mask and memory — a way of asking how heritage can conceal and protect, while also carrying stories of hospitality, tradition, and resilience. In this portrait, I become both myself and something beyond me: a figure woven from encounter, fabric, and place.

Title Camouflage for the soul

Medium: Acrylics on canvas | Year: 2025 | Size: 160 × 200 cm

Details:
This piece explores themes of concealment and identity through organic camouflage patterns. The muted earth-tones and layered textures reflect the tension between what we protect and what we reveal. The work is hand-finished, signed by the artist on the reverse, and ready to hang.

Title Shop til u flop

Medium: Collage, acrylics on canvas | Year: 2006 | Size: 150 × 110 cm

Details:

This work was created using cuttings from old art magazines, combined with acrylic paint on canvas. The collage fragments — layered advertisements, artworks, and cultural images — echo the overload of consumer culture, where identity is shaped by mass imagery and the act of consumption. By reconstructing these fragments into new forms, the piece questions the boundaries between art, commerce, and daily life.
